Is Your Back Yard a Breeding Ground for Mosquitoes?

The Asian Tiger mosquito is one of the most common species of this disease spreading pest in Virginia. This bug is well known for transmitting west nile virus and has also been related to the spread of zika. With the warmer winter months, mosquitoes are making an earlier appearance than usual. Are you prepared for some uninvited guests?

Warm winter weather may invite mosquitoes to your BBQ

The most common mosquito in Virginia is the Asian tiger, Gaines said. In Virginia, it transmits diseases such as West Nile virus, La Crosse encephalitis and Eastern equine encephalitis, according to the Department of Healths website. It also carries the Zika virus, which causes microcephaly, a birth defect. To date Virginias 113 reported cases of Zika disease are tied to travel to Zika-affected areas.But thats no reason to be complacent, especially since warm winter weather can mean more Asian tiger mosquito eggs survive until spring

Have you taken a good, close look around your back yard to make sure there are no potential areas that mosquitoes could lay their eggs?

If you have any items that could collect standing water surrounding your home and give mosquitoes an opportunity to breed, then make sure the water is disposed of. More importantly, make sure this is done daily!

Species On The Move

The Asian tiger mosquito arrived in the United States in the mid-1980s when it stowed away in tires imported from Asia. The mosquitoes, which have black and white stripes and are about a quarter of an inch long, have since found a home in the mid-Atlantic region. They have spread beyond their native home in Southeast Asia, and can be found in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, South America and beyond.
