Tick Borne Powassan in New Jersey

The Powassan virus is a potentially deadly disease that is transmitted by the same tick that is responsible for the spread of Lyme disease. This rare virus has been reported in New Jersey along with other surrounding areas of the United States and due to early tick activity as a result of warmer weather, we need to be on high alert.

Rare, potentially-deadly tick-borne disease Powassan found in New York, New Jersey

Powassan attacks the nervous system, affecting memory, thinking and balance — and in some cases, it can be deadly. The virus is spread through deer ticks and there is no treatment for it. The biggest number of cases reported to the CDC in recent years have been from New York, Wisconsin and Minnesota. New Jersey and Pennsylvania are also among the states with cases of Powassan virus.

During tick season and beyond, taking preventative measures to protect yourself and your four legged friends from these tiny biting creatures is of high importance. Use repellents, wear appropriate clothing and always, always check for for hitchhiking ticks if you’ve been outdoors.

Do you know how to remove a tick if you find one? Have you maintained adequate tick control to your home and backyard? The more you know about these tiny creatures and implement steps to protect yourself the safer our time outside will be.

Experts warn of deadly tick-borne Powassan virus

Though Lyme disease is the most prevalent — and most well-known — tick-borne virus, it isn’t the only reason to take extra precautions when walking in the woods. Tick season is upon us and experts say this could be a “particularly bad year,” as they’re seeing greater numbers of ticks in more areas of the country.

This disease may be rare at this moment in time, but that’s not to say it will stay that way. Do your part in tick prevention to contribute to a safer and healthier environment for your children and pets.
