When Mosquito Season Strikes!

As we emerge from what is considered to be a reasonably mild winter and pleasantly embrace the months of spring, there are other creatures on this planet enjoying the same change in climate. Due to the normally colder months, not being so cold has meant a higher survival rate for problem pests.

Mild winter means an especially buggy spring

Unseasonably warm weather continues to delight backyard chefs and schoolchildren eager to change from long pants to shorts. But the mild winter weather is likely to come at a cost more bugs this spring, arriving earlier than usual in the garden, yard and patio.Just like us, the bugs are simply loving this warm weather, said Mike Raupp, professor of entomology at the University of Maryland.

Are you prepared for the months ahead and the battle many of us face every year when it comes to mosquitoes and ticks? Is your tick control up to date? Are you using adequate repellents?

Not all mosquito repellents work

PAY ATTENTION TO THE ingredients of bug sprays and other repellents, because theyre not equally effective at warding off mosquitoes that carry diseases like Zika virus, researchers say.Products with DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus, which contains an ingredient known as PMD, are more effective at repelling the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever and dengue, researchers found.

Mosquitoes in particular tend to be more active during the hours of dawn and dusk, so if you’ve ever wondered where mosquitoes like to hide out during the day time, here’s an interesting video:-

With mosquitoes transmitting diseases to around 10% of the human population, isn’t it time you made your preparations for not only when mosquito season strikes, but all year round from the myriad of bugs that could potentially cause us harm.
