Is Anywhere Too Cold for Mosquitoes?

The aedes aegypti mosquito is traveling across the globe. The tiny, disease spreading pest is adapting quickly and becoming more and more resilient to our defenses. It is getting clever with its breeding and becoming more comfortable in populated areas such as urban environments and in colder climates.

As the Aedes aegypti mosquito spreads globally, so does the risk of epidemics

Of all the mosquito species that populate the planet, few have proved themselves more resilient or more deadly to humans than the Aedes aegypti. The epidemics fueled by this tiny mosquito stretch across hundreds of years and include millions of victims.

Yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya. And now Zika, which has spread to more than 50 countries and can cause an array of severe birth defects.

It seems that Antarctica may be the only safe haven from these killer bugs… This video explains more about their habitat.

It can still be a cold environment for a mosquito to exist, so if you feel your location isn’t under threat because the weather doesn’t get too warm, then think again.

Where do Mosquitoes Go in the Cold?

Mosquitoes usually disappear when cold weather comes, but they don’t go away for good. They have several strategies for surviving cold weather. Many species of mosquitoes die off when the weather turns cold, leaving only eggs which lie on the ground like seeds, waiting for warmth and spring rains to hatch and produce a new generation.

Wherever you may be located, make sure that you clear any enticing areas that may collect standing water, a firm favorite for mosquitoes to breed. In addition, make sure that your mosquito control is up to date. Don’t let these bloodsuckers get cosy, even though it’s cold outside.
