Ticks are a lot closer to you than you think! They are not just lurking in woodland areas, waiting to latch onto your legs as you walk through the long grass. They don’t decide to just hitch hike on your dog when you take your four legged friend out for a walk. They are there…right in your back yard.
W&M research looks at backyard ticks, disease and land management
Ticks aren’t just the bane of deep woods campers, hikers and hunters. Local research is finding that lots of ticks are actually a lot closer than we realize — and the sweet spot for the little bloodsuckers is right where your backyard meets the woods.
When was the last time that you reviewed your tick control? Do you feel safe in your own surroundings and protected from these disease spreading arachnids?
How to beat Lyme disease and keep enjoying the great outdoors
Lyme disease – a bacterial infection spread by infected ticks – is a particularly complex puzzle, with little reliable data available so far. It can appear in numerous forms, occasionally causing long-term neurological symptoms that could be mistaken for other conditions, such as multiple sclerosis or motor neurone disease.
The place to start protecting yourself is your immediate surroundings. Ticks will be lurking closer than you think so be alert, be educated and invest in professional protection.
