Could Human Diet Pills Stop Mosquitoes From Feeding?

Female mosquitoes like to feed… a lot!

They can consume a very large amount of blood in comparison to their body weight and theoretically are ‘overeating’. So what if mosquitoes were put on a diet? What if they were tricked into thinking they were actually full so that they fed less? Scientific research has recently revealed that human diet pills, could actually stop mosquitoes from feeding by putting them off of their food. Here’s an article with more information.

How Human Diet Drugs Could Curb Mosquitoes’ Blood-Sucking Behavior

What’s the deadliest animal in the world? The mosquito — a tiny, fraction-of-an-ounce pest that’s responsible for several million deaths per year, according to the World Health Organization. But now, scientists say they may have found a way to curb the appetite of these blood-sucking bugs — by using human appetite suppressants.

Can mosquitoes really be fooled into thinking they are full?

It sounds crazy to think there is a possibility of actually putting mosquitoes on a diet. But with this day and age and the way that science progresses, anything is possible.

The study is still in the very early stages, but it does sound promising. If mosquitoes aren’t hungry, it means they bite less. This, in turn, means the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases could reduce significantly.

Human Diet Drugs Kill Mosquitoes’ Appetite, Too

When researchers fed mosquitoes a drug used to treat people for obesity, the insects were less interested in hunting for their next human meal ticket. Believe it or not, mosquitoes don’t bite out of spite. Female mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti need the nutrients present in your plasma to ensure the proper development of their eggs. And though their thirst may seem unquenchable, the ladies actually take time to savor your blood once they’ve sipped their fill.

Of course, keeping protected from mosquitoes at all times goes without saying. As temperatures start to rise, these critters become increasingly active, so whenever you venture outside, be sure to use a trusted mosquito repellent. It’s not just the itch you want to avoid, it’s all those nasty diseases too.
