Mosquito season is in full swing and with the rise in temperatures, these disease spreading pests are enjoying themselves far too much! On the Atlantic coast, there are concerns that the warmer weather could aid the spread of the Zika virus, which has been an increasing problem in Florida over the last few months. Here’s an article with some more information.
It’s peak mosquito time on the Atlantic coast: Will Zika follow?
Now that Florida has become ground zero for locally-transmitted Zika virus in the United States, researchers are scrambling to quantify the risk to other regions of the country. And while the subtropical simmer of the Gulf Coast remains the focus of interest, disease modelers are increasingly worried about the potential of the virus’s spread along the Atlantic seaboard, now that mosquito season — and a particularly hardy species of mosquito — are reaching a peak.
We need to be aware of the very real threat that we are all faced with here. This disease is on the move and at a rapid pace.
With Florida having a high tourism industry, what effect could this have? Will people feel too concerned to travel?
Zika virus sparks concern among Florida tourism industry officials
With state and local officials already investigating another case outside the warning’s 1-square-mile area, Zika could deal a terrible blow to the more than 1.2 million people in Florida’s $82 billion tourism industry.
If people are not properly educated and informed how to protect themselves from mosquitoes, then they could be too scared to take the risk to travel to one of the top tourist destinations in the United States, and that will have a huge impact on the economy.
