The heat is on its way and with it so are the mosquitoes. This time of year is always of concern for our health and protection against these disease spreading pests, particularly with the growing Zika problem.

At present the main culprit for spreading this virus is the Aedes Aegypti. However, the Aedes Albopictus (a close relative of the Asian Tiger Mosquito) and a breed that is commonly found across a broader expanse of the United States is said to have the potential of carrying Zika.

The first local transmission of the Zika virus from mosquitoes in the continental United States could appear in the coming months as the weather warms up and the bloodsuckers start stirring — although how far and wide the virus spreads here will depend on one black-and-white striped insect.

No matter what time of year it is, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the warmer summer months for you to be a risk of these critters. Being prepared and being protected is crucial in fighting the spread of mosquito borne illnesses.

U.S. public health officials must prepare now for the inevitable arrival of Zika virus, a mosquito-borne infection that has spread to 22 countries and territories in the Americas and poses particular danger to pregnant women, health experts said.
